Samsung Galaxy Note 7 – everything you need to know
The Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge are all the hype in 2016 so far, but we know many of you believe the Note series brings the true Samsung flagships. And rightfully so; Galaxy Note smartphones usually come later in the year, boasting superior specs, improved functionality, larger batteries and more.
As we wrap up all the Galaxy S7 coverage our sights turn to the larger side of things. What will the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 have to offer? You are not reading it wrong… and there is no typo in this article. Samsung announced they will indeed be skipping one number and its next high-end smartphone is to take on the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 moniker.You are not reading it wrong... and there is no typo in this article.
Samsung’s naming scheme was a bit confusing to some users. The first Samsung Galaxy Note was released in October 2011, the same year as the Samsung Galaxy S2. Since then, the Galaxy Note series has been one number behind. This could make it seem as though the Note 5 is inferior and older than the Samsung Galaxy S6, for example.
Skipping a number will allow the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 to be seen at the same level as the Galaxy S7 series.
Design and build quality
Though nothing is official quite yet, we have seen plenty of leaked photos showcasing the device. There are bad press renders, good press renders and even some ninja shots of an actual device. All signs point toward a phone that looks much like a slightly bigger version of the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.
Rumors say there will only be a version with edge displays this time around, and all images seem to corroborate such a claim. But there is also at least some evidence suggesting there may be a standard version (coming straight from Samsung’s website). Aside from that, the phone seems to have the same general design of the Galaxy S7, with glass in the front and back, as well as a metal edge around the sides.
The S-Pen can be seen faintly, which looks exactly like the push-to-eject variant present on last year’s model. It remains to be seen as to if Samsung will have devised a way to prevent users from inverted insertion.
The classical home button/fingerprint reader combo is also there, as well as the back and multi-tasking capacitive buttons. There seems to be the usual array of cameras and sensors in the back and front. Meanwhile, the power button would be on the right side, while the volume ones are located on the left side of the phone.
We have seen the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 in 3 colors so far: Black Onyx, Silver Titanium and Blue Coral. And if you are worried about durability, you will be happy to hear this phone is said to come with IP68 certification, making it both dust and water-proof.
Display
As we mentioned above, whether there will be both a curved and standard version is yet to be seen, but we have heard a few more details about the actual screen. Leaks extraordinaire Evan Blass recently claimed the screen would measure 5.7 inches, while GSM Helpdesk’s sources claim the device will feature a 5.8-inch screen. Either way, everyone seems to agree it will have a QHD (2560×1440) resolution and a Super AMOLED panel.
Processor, RAM and storage
Every report claims the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 will come with either a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 or a Samsung Exynos 8893 SoC. There may even be versions of both, which is something Samsung has done in the past.
In terms of memory, we are possibly looking at Samsung dropping the 32 GB variant in exchange for three better options: 64 GB, 128 GB and 256 GB. It seems there will be microSD expansion, and there should also be a whopping 6 GB of RAM in there. Furthermore, it seems likely that the Galaxy Note 7 might also support the new, faster UFS standard for external storage, though Samsung has confirmed they have created a slot that will accept both card types.
Cameras
Samsung is said to be using the same main camera they introduced with the Galaxy S7 series. Multiple reports claim the Galaxy Note 7 will also have a 12 MP camera with dual-pixel phase-detection autofocus. The front side things seem to be getting a little more ordinary, with a 5 MP shooter taking care of your selfies and video calls.
Iris scanner?
Aside from the fingerprint reader, Samsung is said to introduce an iris scanner that will enable unlocking the Galaxy Note 7 with the user’s eye. Software
We expect to see the newest version of TouchWiz coming to the Galaxy Note 7, which is currently known as Grace UX. The new interface looks much more streamlined and flatter, as opposed to having that “bubbly” effect we have seen in previous iterations. Overall, it probably won’t be too massively different, though Samsung’s UI seems to be getting better and better with each release these days.
Battery
There’s conflicting reports on this one. Russian leaker Eldar Murtazin reported the phone would come with a 3,600 mAh battery. Meanwhile, GSM Helpdesk swears the phone will have a higher capacity 4,000 mAh battery.
Nothing is for sure yet, but we do know the Note series has always been known for having larger batteries than its Galaxy S counterparts. The Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge has a 3,600 mAh battery. We won’t make assumptions, but nothing is stopping you from doing so.
Price and release date
We know what you are thinking: “take my money already!”. You may want to read this section before you start pulling out credit cards, though, as the latest rumors put the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 out to be one of the most expensive smartphones we have seen.
SamMobile claims the phone will start at €849 in Europe. That equates to about $910 USD. But of course, none of us expected the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 to be cheap; none of its predecessors have been.
As for the launch, Samsung recently confirmed that we should circle August 2nd in our calendars. We have also heard there will be 5 million units ready to ship by the phone’s release, so you shouldn’t be worrying too much about them running out of stock — though that latter figure isn’t officially confirmed.
